Press Release 09/12/08
Green light for Multi-Million Pound Community Project
Wotton Community
Sports Foundation (WCSF) is delighted with the news that its planning
application for a multi-million pound community sport and recreation
centre at the New Road site has been successful. New Road will have the
latest all-weather floodlit surfaces for training and playing sport,
levelled and well drained grass pitches. There will also be league
standard changing rooms within a clubhouse; a place where community
groups can meet, and a variety of events will be held.
”This
much needed
development will provide the local community with first class
facilities. It will be accessible for the whole community and
will strongly assist in the promotion of the benefits of sport and
active recreation”, Ray Figg, Head of Cultural Services at
Stroud
District Council, says.
Dick
Cary, spokesperson for
WCSF, expands, “The 38 acre site provides much needed playing
and
training facilities for the many clubs, groups and individuals in the
Wotton community. Wotton Rovers Football Club's scattered pitches are
now mainly in one place. Wotton Rugby Club has the facilities
that enable expansion. New Road brings Wotton Hockey Club back home to
Wotton to build on the excellent work being done to encourage the sport
in local schools. Skateboarders and BMX riders at last have a dedicated
park where they are able to enjoy their sport.”
“For
Wotton Tennis Club,
New Road's final phase will see, for the first time, the creation of
competition standard tennis courts for year round play,” he
adds.
“After a gap of many years, local cricketers will have a well
maintained square and Wotton will again have a cricket club. For
younger children there will be a playground and a cycle training
area.” Dick Cary continues “Recent community
surveys showed
great interest for archery, climbing and keep fit. Courses and clubs
will be organised to meet this demand.”
Dave
Champion, is keen to stress “A great deal of time and effort
has
gone into bringing the project to this stage. In particular the WCSF
would like to thank the many people who have made the donations, both
large and small, for the considerable amount of money needed to bring
the project to this position. These people have shown solid belief,
commitment and passion for the project and we thank them
wholeheartedly.” He points out “This, however, is
just the
beginning and serious fundraising is now under way to meet this
ambitious target.”
