Answers
Already we’ve made good progress. Our foundations are firm and we are ready to move forward.
We have secured the land, thanks to Renishaw Plc granting a 999-year lease at a peppercorn rent on around 40 acres next to Katherine Lady Berkeley’s School.
The Foundation has already successfully attracted almost £350,000 in funding form the Town Council, District Council, Rugby and though its own fundraising to get the scheme off the ground.
Outline planning permission for the whole scheme has been granted, - a major milestone.
Phase 1, a rugby pitch, has been completed which will be the new home ground for Wotton Rugby Club.
We’re well on the way already, but the hardest part is about to start!
We are about to embark on Phase 2 of the scheme – which will really make a difference to Wotton.
Phase 2 will bring the pavilion and changing rooms as well as a floodlit football pitch, sports training ground, BMX track, access road and car-park.
Finally Phase 3 will introduce more pitches, tennis courts and an all weather pitch.
3. Why do we need the Leisure Complex?
In recent years local sports clubs have been hampered by the lack of facilities. A local cricket club has been lost, a very successful hockey club lacks a home ground, the development of thriving football and rugby clubs has been restrained and newer sports for younger people have not been catered for.
Without facilities Wotton is in danger of losing a number of sports clubs that shape community life and provide opportunities for the people living in the town. Local sports clubs help towns like Wotton to define their identity and bring the community together. A community survey commissioned by the Town Council in 2002 highlighted the need for sports facilities in the town. This was reinforced by a consultation exercise conducted by the council in 2004 for the Wotton-under-Edge Healthcheck.
New facilities will allow the clubs to play a full role in the community extending the opportunities that they offer. They will be able to open their doors to more people, especially young people and children in the town, helping them to gain life skills and confidence through constructive out of school leisure.
Established sports clubs in Wotton are keen to extend their role in the community and have plans in place to do this, but they are dependent on the development of local facilities.
Quality sports and leisure facilities will have a very positive impact on securing a prosperous future for the town.
